Looking for third-party modules for NI CompactDAQ (cDAQ) or CompactRIO (cRIO)?
2026-08-20
WireFlow develops C Series modules for specialized test and measurement applications, including switching, battery testing and fault injection. However, compatibility differs between cDAQ and cRIO – and it is important to choose a module designed for your specific platform.
NI CompactDAQ and CompactRIO both use the C Series module form factor. This makes it possible to extend an NI-based test and measurement system with specialized third-party modules when standard NI modules do not provide the functionality required for an application. WireFlow develops several C Series modules designed to complement the NI ecosystem and solve specialized test and measurement challenges.
Can third-party C Series modules be used with CompactDAQ?
Yes, but not every third-party C Series module is automatically compatible with CompactDAQ.
Although CompactDAQ and CompactRIO use the same physical C Series form factor, there is an important difference in how modules communicate with the system.
CompactDAQ systems use the NI-DAQmx driver, while CompactRIO also provides access to a programmable FPGA through LabVIEW FPGA. Some third-party modules are designed specifically for cRIO and depend on FPGA functionality. These modules cannot necessarily be used in a standard CompactDAQ chassis.
Therefore, physical compatibility alone does not guarantee that a C Series module will work with cDAQ.
What should you check before choosing a module?
If you are looking for a third-party module for CompactDAQ, check that:
- the module is specifically stated to support CompactDAQ/cDAQ
- it is supported by NI-DAQmx
- it does not require LabVIEW FPGA functionality
When in doubt, contact the module manufacturer before specifying the hardware for your system.
WireFlow C Series modules
WireFlow has developed C Series modules for more than 15 years, providing specialized functionality for test, measurement and validation systems.
Our modules are designed for applications where additional functionality is needed within an NI-based system, including:
- multiplexing and signal switching
- battery stack monitoring
- fault insertion and fault injection
- specialized test and measurement applications
WireFlow’s C Series portfolio includes modules developed for both CompactRIO and CompactDAQ environments.
Important: Compatibility varies between individual modules. Always check the specifications of the specific product to determine whether it supports cRIO, cDAQ or both.
Note that all WireFlow C-Series modules are compatible with cRIO. The WF 3132 is the only module that supports both cRIO and cDAQ platforms.
WF 3132 Multiplexer Module
The WF 3132 is an example of a WireFlow C Series module that can be used with CompactDAQ. The module provides multiplexer functionality for test and measurement applications and supports NI-DAQmx, enabling it to operate in a CompactDAQ system.

How to find the right C Series module
Start by defining what functionality your test system requires and which NI platform you are using.
If you already have a CompactDAQ system, look specifically for modules with documented cDAQ and NI-DAQmx support.
For CompactRIO systems, both DAQmx-compatible modules and modules developed specifically for FPGA-based applications may be available, depending on the hardware configuration.
WireFlow can help determine which of our modules are suitable for your system and application.

Frequently asked questions
Are all C Series modules compatible with CompactDAQ?
No. Although C Series modules may share the same physical form factor, CompactDAQ requires compatible modules and driver support. Some third-party modules are designed exclusively for CompactRIO and LabVIEW FPGA.
Can WireFlow C Series modules be used with CompactDAQ?
One of them can. The WireFlow WF 3132 supports CompactDAQ and NI-DAQmx.
Can a CompactRIO module be used in CompactDAQ?
Not necessarily. If the module depends on LabVIEW FPGA or other cRIO-specific functionality, it will not work as a standard module in a CompactDAQ chassis.
Does CompactDAQ support NI-DAQmx?
Yes. NI-DAQmx is the primary driver framework used with CompactDAQ. For a third-party module to work as a standard cDAQ module, appropriate DAQmx support is therefore important.
